Sleep, A View in Statistics
Sleep is an important and overlooked part of Health. Have you ever tracked your sleep, or wondered about how much sleep you need? Everyone has different needs for sleep. The basic advice is an adult need at least 7 hours of sleep a 24-hour period for good overall health. Sleep should be quality with little interruption and without symptoms that take away from a restful experience. Almost a third of adults currently have sleep insufficiency or sleep less than 7 hours in a 24 hours period on a regular, consistent basis.
Poor sleep or insufficient sleep has been linked to type 2 Diabetes and correlation between higher levels of Hemoglobin A1c in adults. Short sleep duration is associated with weight gain and affects sense of wellbeing such as happiness and energy. Changing sleep patterns can improve health and is a fact. The statistics are clear.
Almost half of adults feel sleepy, or tired, during most of the week.. This is a key indicator of lack of sleep, or sleep insufficiency. With the strong link between sleep and diabetes, obesity, and sense of well-being, it should be a focus to improve health by reducing this lifestyle factor that has a proven relationship of negative effects on an individual’s health. Healthy habits, such as positive sleep patterns can help individuals to a healthier path for risk reduction for diabetes, obesity, and improve sense of wellbeing.
